Greek mathematician Constantin Carathéodory was born in Berlin, Germany, to a Greek father and a German mother. He spent much of his life in Germany and Greece, and held professorships at the universities of Göttingen, Athens, and Munich. Carathéodory made significant contributions to the fields of real analysis, measure theory, and the calculus of variations.
