British explorer Matthew Flinders was born in Donington, Lincolnshire, England, in 1774. He joined the Royal Navy at the age of 15 and quickly rose through the ranks. Flinders is best known for his exploration of the Australian coastline, which he charted and named. He also discovered and named many of the islands and bays along the coast.
