Maurice Yaméogo served as the first President of Burkina Faso from 1959 to 1966. He was a leader of the African Democratic Rally (RDA) and was elected president after the independence of the colony of Upper Volta from France in 1959. Yaméogo was overthrown in a military coup in 1966 and died in exile in 1983.
