Moulay Ismail was a ruler of Morocco who reigned from 1672 to 1727. He established strong diplomatic relations with France, which had been looking for a way to establish a foothold in North Africa. Ismail granted the French a number of privileges, including the right to trade and build churches. In exchange, the French provided him with military support and weapons.
