Answer
Max Ernst started painting while studying at the University of Bonn in 1910. He studied art history and philosophy, and was influenced by the work of Paul Cézanne and Vincent van Gogh. He also began to experiment with automatic drawing, a technique in which the artist lets his hand move freely without conscious control.
