Max Euwe, born Machgielis Euwe, was a Dutch mathematician and chess player who served as the fifth President of FIDE from 1970 to 1978. He notably defeated Alexander Alekhine in 1935 to become the fifth World Chess Champion, and successfully defended his title in a rematch the following year. Euwe was also a prominent figure in the development of chess theory and strategy.
