Max Perutz was appointed chair of the LMB in 1947, and held the position until 1979. Under his leadership, the LMB became one of the world's leading centres for molecular biology. Perutz was a pioneer in the field of protein crystallography, and his work helped to reveal the structure of haemoglobin, the oxygen-carrying protein in red blood cells.
