After Maximian's death in 310, Constantine ordered his body to be brought to Rome, where he had it buried in a golden sarcophagus. He then deified Maximian, which meant that he declared him to be a god. This was a controversial decision, as it was not customary for Roman emperors to be deified while they were still alive.
