Maximian was ordered to commit suicide by his son-in-law Constantine. Constantine and his mother Helena had previously forced Maximian into retirement and had been wary of his political ambitions. When Maximian began plotting against Constantine, Constantine ordered him to commit suicide or be executed. Maximian committed suicide on March 1, 310 AD.
