Maximilian was the second emperor of Mexico. The first was Agustín de Iturbide, who ruled from 1821 to 1823. Maximilian ruled from 1864 to 1867. He was a European who was installed on the throne by French forces, and his rule was opposed by many Mexicans. He was eventually captured and executed by republican forces.
