With the support of the French Empire, Maximilian I became the Emperor of Mexico. The French had intervened in Mexico in 1861 to protect their financial interests there, and they installed Maximilian as emperor in 1864. Maximilian's rule was unpopular with many Mexicans, however, and he was eventually defeated and executed by forces loyal to the Mexican republic in 1867.
