Maximilian I first met French emperor Napoleon III in Paris in 1852. They met at the Château de Saint-Cloud, a palace in the suburbs of Paris. They discussed the possibility of Maximilian becoming emperor of Mexico. Napoleon III was willing to support Maximilian's candidacy, but he wanted Maximilian to promise to respect Mexican sovereignty and not to interfere with French interests in the country. Maximilian agreed to these terms.
