Maximilian I of Mexico was executed by the forces of the Restored Mexican Republic on June 19, 1867. Maximilian was a Habsburg prince who was placed on the throne of Mexico by the French emperor Napoleon III in an attempt to create a French puppet state in North America. However, the Mexican people resisted French rule and the French were eventually forced to withdraw from Mexico.
