Maximilian I of Mexico was the younger brother of Emperor Franz Joseph I of Austria-Hungary. Maximilian was a Hapsburg archduke who became Emperor of Mexico from 1864 to 1867. He was installed on the throne by French Emperor Napoleon III, who had invaded Mexico in an attempt to establish a puppet state in the Americas.
