Maximilian I was an Austrian-born Habsburg ruler. He was the Holy Roman Emperor from 1493 to 1519, and also ruled the Austrian Habsburg lands, Spain, Burgundy, and the Netherlands. Maximilian was a skilled diplomat and military commander, and he oversaw the expansion of the Habsburg dynasty into a major European power.
