Maximinus Thrax became emperor after the assassination of Severus Alexander in 235 AD. Maximinus was a powerful general who had served under Alexander and had been promoted to the rank of Caesar in 231 AD. He was a popular figure with the army and was seen as a strong and capable leader. After Alexander's death, the army proclaimed Maximinus as emperor and he was quickly accepted by the Senate.
