Mengistu Haile Mariam was the General Secretary of the Derg, a Marxist-Leninist military junta that ruled Ethiopia from 1974 to 1991. During his time in office, Mengistu oversaw a period of political repression and economic turmoil. He was eventually overthrown by the Ethiopian People's Revolutionary Democratic Front in 1991.
