The Ethiopian People's Revolutionary Party (EPRP) attempted to assassinate Mengistu Haile Mariam, the president of Ethiopia from 1974 to 1991. The EPRP was a Marxist-Leninist organization that was opposed to Mengistu's rule. The assassination attempt took place in 1977 and failed. The EPRP was subsequently banned by the government and its members were persecuted.
