Michael Elgin signed with New Japan Pro-Wrestling (NJPW) in 2016. He made his debut for the promotion on January 4, 2016, at Wrestle Kingdom 10, where he defeated Hirooki Goto. Elgin quickly rose through the ranks of NJPW, becoming a top contender for the IWGP Heavyweight Championship. He eventually won the title in 2017, becoming the first non-Japanese wrestler to hold the championship since 2006.
