Miguel Díaz-Canel became the President of the Council of State of Cuba in 2018, succeeding Raul Castro. He had previously served as the First Vice President of the Council of State and the Minister of Higher Education from 2013 to 2018. Díaz-Canel is a member of the Communist Party of Cuba and is considered to be a close ally of Castro.
