Primo de Rivera was an army general who served as administrator of the military regions of Valencia, Madrid, and Barcelona. He was a conservative who believed in strong government and military control. He was also a supporter of the monarchy. In 1923, he led a military coup that overthrew the government of Spain. He then became dictator of Spain, ruling until 1930.
