Möngke Khan became the Great Khan of the Mongol Empire on 1 July 1251. He was the son of Ögedei Khan and the grandson of Genghis Khan. Möngke Khan continued the expansion of the Mongol Empire, conquering China and the Middle East. He also attempted to invade Japan, but was unsuccessful. Möngke Khan died in 1259, and was succeeded by his brother Kublai Khan.
