Mongkut, also known as King Rama IV, was the son of Prince Isarasundhorn. He was born in 1804 and became king in 1851. Mongkut was a very intelligent and capable ruler, and he is credited with modernizing Thailand and opening it up to the West. He died in 1868 and was succeeded by his son, King Chulalongkorn.
