Mu'awiya was a son of Abu Sufyan and a member of the Umayyad clan of the Quraish tribe. He was a brother-in-law of Prophet Muhammad through his marriage to his daughter Zaynab. Mu'awiya became a powerful political and military figure in the early Muslim community, and he eventually became the first caliph of the Umayyad Caliphate.
