Mu'awiya and his father, Abu Sufyan, were members of the Umayyad clan of the Quraysh tribe, and thus opposed the prophet Muhammad and his followers in the early years of Islam. They were eventually defeated by the Muslims in the Battle of Yarmouk in 636, and Mu'awiya converted to Islam shortly thereafter.
