Abdallahi ibn Muhammad took over leadership of the Mahdist State following Muhammad Ahmad's death in 1885. Although lacking his predecessor's charismatic appeal, Abdallahi proved to be a shrewd administrator and able military leader, managing to consolidate and expand the Mahdist territories despite constant pressure from colonial powers.
