Murad V was declared Sultan on 30 May 1876 after his predecessor, Abdul Aziz, was deposed. Murad V was only 16 years old when he became Sultan, and he was considered to be mentally unstable. He was deposed after only three months on the throne, and his brother, Abdul Hamid II, was declared Sultan.
