Makhno was imprisoned for seven years for his involvement with an anarchist group. He was arrested in 1908 and sentenced to seven years in prison. During his time in prison, he read extensively about anarchist philosophy and became an ardent supporter of the movement. After his release from prison, he became involved in the Russian Revolution and led the anarchist Black Army.
