After the Russian Revolution of 1917, Nestor Makhno became one of the leaders of the Ukrainian Free Territory, a revolutionary peasant republic that existed in Ukraine between 1919 and 1921. After the Ukrainian Free Territory was defeated by the Red Army in 1921, Makhno fled to France, where he lived until his death in 1934.
