Ngô Đình Diệm came to support Vietnamese nationalism in opposition to Hồ Chí Minh and Bảo Đại. Diệm was a Catholic and a strong anti-communist, and he believed that only a strong and united Vietnam could resist the threat of communism from the north. He also believed that the emperor, Bảo Đại, was a weak and ineffectual leader who was not fit to lead the country.
