In 1963, South Vietnamese generals led by General Dương Văn Minh, with the backing of the United States, launched a coup d'état against President Ngô Đình Diệm. The coup was motivated by Diệm's unpopularity and his perceived inability to effectively lead the country against the communist insurgency. The coup succeeded, and Diệm and his brother Ngô Đình Nhu were assassinated.
