Ngô Đình Diệm was the first president of South Vietnam. He was assassinated on November 2, 1963, by a group of South Vietnamese army officers with the assistance of the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA). The CIA had been involved in a plot to overthrow Diệm since 1954, but the assassination was not sanctioned by the Kennedy administration.
