Thiệu settled in Boston, Massachusetts, in 1998, after serving as president of South Vietnam from 1967 to 1975. Thiệu's government was overthrown in 1975 by the communist North Vietnamese government, and Thiệu fled to the United States. He initially settled in Alexandria, Virginia, but moved to Boston in 1998 to be closer to his children and grandchildren. Thiệu died in Boston in 2001 at the age of 80.
