In November 1960, a coup d'état was attempted against Ngô Đình Diệm, the president of South Vietnam. Nguyễn Văn Thiệu was one of the generals who helped put down the coup. Diệm was able to remain in power, but the coup attempt weakened his government and increased tensions between the military and the civilian government.
