Nicholas Murray Butler was a famous educator and politician. He served as president of Columbia University for more than 40 years and was a leading advocate for progressive education. He was also the president of the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace and served as the United States ambassador to Japan. Butler was a brilliant and accomplished man, but he was not an engineer.
