Answer
Taraki was overthrown by Hafizullah Amin on September 14, 1979. Amin, who had been Taraki's deputy, had been growing increasingly dissatisfied with Taraki's policies and had been plotting against him for some time. Amin's coup was successful and he immediately consolidated his power by purging the government of Taraki's supporters and allies. Amin's rule was short-lived, however, as he was overthrown and killed by the Soviet Union in December 1979.
