AD 489 marked the invasion of Italy by Theodoric the Great, an Ostrogothic king. Theodoric led his people across the Julian Alps, seeking to establish a kingdom in the Western Roman Empire. After defeating the Roman general Odoacer in several battles, Theodoric captured Ravenna, the imperial capital, in 493. He then established the Ostrogothic Kingdom of Italy, which lasted until 553.
