Otto IV, the first of the Welf dynasty to be Holy Roman Emperor, was previously the King of Germany. He was born in 1175 to Henry the Lion, Duke of Saxony and Bavaria, and his wife Matilda of England. Otto was crowned King of Germany in 1198, and became Holy Roman Emperor in 1209. He died in 1218, and was succeeded by his nephew Frederick II.
