Answer
Otto Warmbier, an American college student, was detained in North Korea in January 2016 and sentenced to 15 years of hard labor for attempting to steal a propaganda poster. After 17 months of captivity, he was released in June 2017 in a vegetative state and died just days later. The cause of his death has been attributed to the torture and abuse he endured while in North Korean custody.
