Nurmi was the first person to light the Olympic Flame in 1952 at the opening ceremony of the Helsinki Olympics. He was chosen to do this because of his legendary status as a long-distance runner. He had won nine Olympic gold medals during his career, and was considered to be one of the greatest athletes of all time.
