Answer
Padre Pio was canonized a saint by Pope John Paul II on June 16, 2002. He was a Capuchin friar who was known for his stigmata, or the wounds of Christ, which he bore on his hands, feet, and side. Padre Pio was also a popular confessor and spiritual director, and he is credited with having performed many miracles. He was beatified in 1999 and canonized three years later.
