What was unique about Patrick Hillery's presidential election?

  • He was the youngest candidate

  • He won by a landslide

  • He was the only candidate

  • He was the first non-political candidate

Answer

Patrick Hillery's election as President of Ireland in 1973 was unique in that he was the only candidate. This was because the election had been called following the death of President Erskine Childers in a road accident. As there was no other candidate, the election was a formality and Hillery was elected unopposed. This was the first time in Irish history that an election for President had been uncontested.
