Marty Balin was an American musician, singer-songwriter, and record producer who co-founded Jefferson Airplane with Paul Kantner. He was born in Tacoma, Washington, in 1942 and grew up in San Francisco. He began his music career in the early 1960s, performing in various local bands. In 1965, he co-founded Jefferson Airplane with Kantner, Signe Anderson, Jorma Kaukonen, and Jack Casady.
