Paulinho began his professional career with Pão de Açúcar, a Brazilian football club based in São Paulo. The club was founded in 1945 and competed in the Campeonato Paulista, the top tier of São Paulo state football. Paulinho joined Pão de Açúcar's youth academy in 2004 and made his senior debut in 2006. He played for the club for two seasons before moving to Bragantino in 2008.
