In 1822, Dom Pedro I of Brazil became the first Emperor of Brazil. The country had been a Portuguese colony for over three centuries, but in 1808, the Portuguese royal family fled to Brazil to escape the Napoleonic Wars. Dom Pedro I was the son of King João VI of Portugal, and he was appointed regent of Brazil in 1816.
