Pedro I abdicated the throne in 1831 due to political turmoil. After he came to power, he quickly alienated his supporters by enacting liberal reforms that alienated the conservative majority. He also angered the church by granting religious freedom and by attempting to divorce his wife. This led to a series of revolts that culminated in Pedro's abdication in favor of his daughter, Princess Maria.
