In addition to being a Navy pilot and NASA astronaut, Alan L. Bean was also an aeronautical engineer. He earned a bachelor's degree in aeronautical engineering from the University of Washington in 1955, and then served in the Navy for five years before joining NASA in 1963. Bean was selected as an astronaut in 1963, and he flew on two space missions, Gemini 12 and Apollo 12.
