In 1954, Conrad received his aviator wings from the U.S. Navy. He had been flying for the Navy since 1943, when he enlisted at the age of 17. After graduating from flight school in 1946, he served as a fighter pilot and test pilot. In 1954, he was selected for the Project Mercury astronaut training program.
