Answer
Rolf M. Zinkernagel was a Swiss immunologist who shared the 1996 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine with Peter Doherty for their discoveries of how the immune system recognizes virus-infected cells. Zinkernagel and Doherty showed that the immune system can distinguish between infected cells and healthy cells by recognizing viral proteins that are expressed on the surface of infected cells.
