Phocas began his reign as the Eastern Roman Emperor in 602. He was a usurper who had murdered Maurice, the previous emperor, and his family. Phocas was a brutal and incompetent ruler, and his reign was marked by constant warfare and internal instability. He was eventually overthrown and killed by Heraclius, who became the new emperor in 610.
